Situational Update Saakow district

Since the onset of 2023 Deyr Season, heavy rains fell in Jubaland State of Somalia have resulted in flash floods across Saakow district. All settlements in Saakow were affected by El-Nino flash floods. The number of affected sites have increased since the last two weeks and the affected population has doubled.

Almost 70% of the district is covered water due to Juba overflow and continuous heavy rains causing devastating floods which have led damage to crop lands and road infrastructure rendering impassable and cutting off access in and out of the town.

Many people lost their productive asserts and ways of earning living leading to hunger and lastly it may result starvation. There is fear the outbreak waterborne diseases and other health hazards due to the contamination of water sources and the prolonged exposure of people to stagnant water will exacerbate the situation.
